Let loose in Korea.

Small update: I've been in South Korea for 12 days now. It's an amazing fact in itself because 1) I never thought I'd be back here so soon after finishing my exchange stint last year, 2) it was/is so good to be here with family, and 3) to be here on holiday for this long is unprecedented, to me (Perth and Melbourne don't count because I stayed for free the entire time).

YAYYYYYYY I'M HERE!!!!!!

Haha okay, I just needed to get that little explosion of jubilation out.

On the 6th of June, my parents, sister and I boarded our flight to Seoul at 9.35am, almost right after my father finished his night shift at work. We arrived around 9.10 that night, after a brief transit at HKIA, and with the next morning thus began our adventures in Korea.

We had two full days all to ourselves, during which we visited Gyeongbokgung (not for too long; my parents got tired of the architecture by the time we got to the Queen's private chambers), Namdaemun market (which my mum LOVED, and visited again by herself on the second day), Banpo Bridge Rainbow Musical Fountain, Myeongdong, went on the DMZ tour, caught a Nanta performance, and of course, had 3 out of 4 meals at Itaewon. Zipping around here and there all made possible by taking taxis, and not public transport, of course.

Then on the 9th, a Saturday, we met our tour group members at Gimpo Airport, and off we went to Jeju Island! Places we got to explore included a park filled with stone sculptures made by just one man (not Hallim Park, not the Stone Park), Mysterious Road, the seaside, Seongeup Folk Village, Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, Seojikoji (where they filmed the drama 'All In'), horseriding (only the young'uns, sadly; I was too chicken to go for it without my family members), Cheonjiyeon waterfall, the Teddy Bear Museum (LOADS of fun!), Yeongdu-am (Dragon Head) rock, and various fields of flowers and (fake) fruits for photo-ops.

Monday the 11th saw all of us taking a flight back to Seoul, where another family of 6 joined our tour group, before being carted off to Everland where I had wagon-loads of fun from taking the wooden roller coaster there, the T-Express, with my mum (brave girl!), and the whole family going on the safari bus tour. We then went to the Yeoju Premium Outlets (Nad's most anticipated attraction), before travelling for hourssss to reach a traditional hanok village homestay to stay the night.

When we arrived around 10 that night, filming for the Korean drama Gakshital (Bridal Mask) was still going on, so I was a little embarrassed to find crew staring at us for making so much noise when walking through the village with our roller luggage bags. But no, we did not see the actors anywhere; they were somewhere further in than our houses. And they'd left by the time we had breakfast the next morning. Too bad. But I truly enjoyed sleeping in a hanok village; the toilet was modern, the room was cute, the floor we slept on was heated, and the different architecture of houses of different ranks were interesting. I'd repeat the experience in a heartbeat.

We got to take a train from a popular seaside train station, Jeongdongjin station, to Gangneung station, where we re-boarded our tour bus to Mount Seorak. The view from its peak was an enchanting sight to behold, especially after the thrill of climbing to the top with my dad, on nothing but our hands and common shoes, without the safety of railings and paved stone steps. Felt good to be at the top, and it felt even better (marginally) to be there first out of our entire tour group (cheap victory? I'll still take it)

On the day we returned to Seoul city, we got to visit Nami Island first, and almost everybody in the group rented a bicycle to see the sights. My family got two single bikes for my mum and me, and a double for my dad and my sister, who hasn't fully mastered the two-wheeled mode of transportation. So, so fun. I miss cycling. Next was a stop at an amethyst factory, and then at Dongdaemun, where my parents had the most fun at the Pyeonghwa wholesale building, instead of Doota where we were dropped off.

And of course, along the way, besides the halal Indian food we sampled here and there, we got to try a lot of traditional Korean food, like the pollack soup, and grilled mackerel.

On the morning of the 14th, at 7.20 am, my parents left for the airport to head back home. My dad had an afternoon shift to catch the next day. And my tour group left the hotel at 9am to continue their tour. My sister and I were finally, truly, on our own in Korea.

Truth be told, the two of us missed our parents and tour group a lot the first (two?) day/s. We'd had so much fun together as a group, and it was like a buffer against our own foreigness in a foreign land, having these other Malay people around us all the time. When Nad and I were on our own, we had to face locals without parent-buffers, and lacked the resources to skip maximum-exposure transport mediums like the subway.

I say this as if I've never been to Korea, never lived here for 4 and 1/2 months. But somehow it feels different this time, because I'm here without Aishah, Pat, Gerry, and Anne. This time, I'm the one in the driver's seat, and it's been a year since I've touched the pedal.

Nad and I haven't done much since we were left to our own devices. Our first day, we just did laundry at the guesthouse before having a Mr Pizza dinner. And so far, in the past 5 days, we've only gone to Insa-dong, Myeongdong, a baseball game (strange experience, that one!); and Toseon and PIFF Square in Busan. Maybe we're just not motivated to leave the comforts of the guesthouse, or maybe we've been tired out by 7 straight days of activity.

But I think the cause is more likely to be me. When I was in Busan on the exchange program, I went out to town and did things as infrequently as I go to Orchard Road in Singapore. Because I lived there. So my days were not spent in endless business. They were spent interspersed with school, with mundane stuff like laundry and dormitory meals, and just hanging around Hadan at Starbucks, at Vongole, at Ediya, at E-Mart. I was here as a student that lived here, not as a tourist.

And now that I'm here in the capacity of a tourist, I'm out of sorts as to what to do.

Today, our first morning in Busan, we'd been too comfortable in our private double room to leave early. And then the first thing we did when left at 2.30pm was hardly touristy at all - I brought Nad to Toseong-yeok, where I used to have my classes, to have lunch at the small restaurant I used to frequent between classes. We had Cheese Ramyeon and Cheese Ra-pokki (a mix of ddeokbokki and ramyeon) and saw briefly the exterior of the school buildings.

When we went to PIFF Square for Ho-ddeok (YUMMY ricecake patty filled with sugar and nuts), it was raining, so it, plainly, sucked. It sucked for us so much that we took the subway back to Haeundae to seek refuge in our room. Nampo-dong didn't seem as fabulous with rain dampening the day, as it usually does. So we both didn't have fun, and I have failed in my role as tour guide.

Now Nad is sleeping soundly; it's already hit 8pm on our first full day in Busan. With rain being the forecast for tomorrow as well, I'm feeling reluctant to carry out my original plan of going to the Pusandae area for another try at shopping. So what will I do tomorrow as a tourist in Busan?

Maybe I'll just try to keep it indoors, like Centum City and S-Funz which are nearby the guesthouse. Or maybe we'll go local, and stay indoors tomorrow, like so many people seemed to do today, what with the streets being so empty today. Either way, it will probably be deemed another failure in touristy terms, but in the local context, I hope it'll seem at least a little enjoyable.

So it seems I've been too lazy to update blogger or twitter or facebook since my return from the short vacation in Malaysia. I've been meaning to, but I just can't find the motivation to sit in front of a computer screen with the sole purpose of uploading pictures and recounting my experiences/ feelings.

Not that the vacation was not fun; it was. Definitely. But the fun I had didn't come from doing fascinating, unusual things which I would normally very excitedly blog about as soon as I arrived home. It was from simply being away from home, eating out all the time, and living out of a suitcase (or luggage, since not too many people use suitcases for travelling nowadays).

There's just something inherently exciting about coming to a hotel, never knowing what exactly awaits you in your room, even if you've stayed there more than three times before. It's especially thrilling when you realise that the room's even better/ bigger than you remember it, and you open up the drapes to a view of the city, the sea, and the Eye on Malaysia. You unpack your luggage (or not), and then try to nap to make up for the few hours of travelling in a car from the previous hotel a few states away. You slip in between familiar and comforting crisp white sheets, and your eyes drift close thinking about how nice it is that hotels run the air-conditioning 24/7. In the morning, after a quick soak in the bathtub, you feast on a buffet breakfast or intercontinental food, something so unnecessary but vital to a hotel experience. And then you pack your bags again and leave.

"Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars..."
It's such a nice tune. It even appears in my dreams sometimes. And although Hayley Williams' voice doesn't sound very distinctive in that song, it's gotten so popular probably because everyone's always looking for a break from something in their lives. Unless you're someone like me, who likes the song because the tune is nice and the words are wistful/ wishy-washy/ quirky. Kinda like Fireflies by Owl City. Another nice tune. Wow am I getting a small headache now (my sister just sprayed Gapscent "Heaven" around my room and, though it smells nice, it's getting to me). I think I'll stop here.

Joyride.

It's been a loooong time since I've ventured into the ghost town known as my blog. And the past few times were laughable attempts at a conversation with myself. I've had better luck self-conversing through twitter, but sometimes I suppose I miss the ability to word-vomit and not worry about having to have understandable yet entertaining one-liners. I'm too lazy to be creative at twittering. So voila! I'm back in the old blogosphere, attempting to explain my activities of the past month to my future self re-reading my thoughts.

Since exams have ended, I have been learning more and more about myself. I have gone through exam hell, extreme elation that exams were extinguished, pure self-indulgence, and non-repentance.

Right now I'm still at the pure self-indulgence stage. Exams have been done almost three weeks now, but I'm nowhere near tired of staying at home. There's driving to learn, comics to read, shows to watch, knitting to do, household chores to finish... I'm just not done with my holiday. Which explains why I'm kinda leaning towards passive job-looking. Meaning I don't look for ads, don't actively send out resumes. If I find one, then it's by total chance. If I don't find one, then -hey- all the more fun for me.

My only problem is that the activities I get up to are not doing me any good physically. I'm cooking more nowadays, but my only motivation to cook and bake more is so I can eat! I don't remotely enjoy the act of cooking itself, I just enjoy the fact that I get to eat recipes that I can't find anywhere in Singapore, and that nobody will make for me. Like rice cakes, and the meatier variation I made, and minced meat patties, and peanut butter-nutella brownies (which, I'm sad to report, are down to the last 3 pieces. I may decide to have a farewell, savouring ceremony tomorrow in the presence of milk). Tomorrow for breakfast I'm also planning on making rice griddle cakes, wherein the rice is cooked in milk and honey first, and for the main meals either German potato dumplings called kartoffelkloesse, Bavarian bread dumplings called semmeknoedel, or German egg noodles called spaetzle. What a mouthful. I hope they taste great. But that's the thing. I cook so I can indulge. T_T I've created a monster!

One thing I'm sure of: this phase will eventually pass. Just like how the K-Pop cloud is actually leaving me a little behind, and romance novels have lost their glitter, and swimming has become so troublesome (not pleased to report that I completely stopped swimming since the time I got sick THREE months ago. Completely lost my momentum, and it's a lonely affair anyway).

Random weird fact: in my head I'm dictating my thoughts to my fingertips in a pseudo British accent. Can't say whether it sound believable or not, because it all comes out garbled the soonest I open my mouth to try speak the words. So for now I'm content to let it simmer inside my skull. Bubble bubble bubble.

dot . dot . dot .

Went to the zoo last friday with B.L.U.E. Marx! (Consisting of Pat, Aishah, Mel and me. Duh! We're like, only the most famous people in the solar system!) Superduperbananalicious fun. I will type out the "Friends-of-BLUE-Marx" post soon! Just... let me finish procrastinating?

And then on Sunday I had a picnic at East Coast with my lovelies Syaz and Diana! We had packed Nasi Sambal Goreng which was omgosh-so-good brought by Syaz, some of the meaty rice cakes, and some brownies. And of course, Sprite. Had fun despite (or maybe because) of the little drizzle that persisted our last half-an-hour there.

Then I had to zoom-zoom off early (sorry guys) to a family gathering at Sakunthala, 20-odd people altogether including my grandma who seldom goes out to eat with us. If you'll look at the tagged photos of me on Facebook, you'll see several unglam pictures of me eating and sulking and whatnot. I'm so over being embarassed by them. I'm just an unglam person, period. I've made my peace with it. Though I have to say the Khulfi or North Indian ice cream that I was wolfing down unglamorously, was laced with pure silver which, while not contributing to the taste at all, made me feel like I was eating MAGIC! Sorry, my exaggerating mode got accidentally switched on. It tasted of nothingness, the ice-cream was okay, but at least it looked good.

Now I shall end my word vomit. I think I went too overkill on the amount of parenthesis and extra, unnecessary descriptions. Oh well. It's the little British voice in my head that keeps egging me on. It actually sounds a little like an old English grandma. Or a Cockney tranny. I shall add this to my old Texan grandma repertoire of accents. Cool. American and Continental. I shall next learn how to think in the Hong Kong tai tai voice! ... Shh... I could literally hear myself losing that British voice. Now I'm thinking Singaporean again. Makes a noticeable difference in the way I type, doesn't it?

Better end now before it comes back, annoying old bat. Ohmygosh, I feel it creeping on me!...

I'm supposed to be asleep, since we have to wake up at 2AM to send my brother to the airport, but my mind's a riot of thoughts. He'll be gone for 6 months and what did I pray for him besides his safety? Only that he returns a better person (and that he doesn't lose any money there hahaha).

BUY ME KEYCHAINS FOR EVERY CITY YOU VISIT, MMKAY? I DON'T CARE HOW TOURISTY IT IS! Oh, and buy me Nike shoes - I'll be eternally grateful (:

Everyone's done their re-cap/ resolutions post, except for me. Not that I don't have resolutions, but I haven't really thought about 2009 as a whole, and I've procrastinated so much on blogging about some events that I feel like the year isn't complete yet. So looking back, what I feel at this moment is: MUST make it to Melbourne this year! Then we can go tobogganing on snowy slopes, and shopping! And must definitely get my license by then so I can drive us anywhere.

Gym-ing fell-through today, because my cousin couldn't make it. So I spent my day playing with Lego (again), and furnished the two-storey house that I made on Sunday with a garage for the Hummer, a horse, a stable, and a new bathroom that comes with a shower cubicle. And I'm proud to say that I managed to use up every single piece in that bucket! The stable's roof looks a little bit messy, since it's made up of leftover pieces, but it covers the horse. I'm proudest of the toilet, built above the garage, because I simply love the shower! I even made up a story about the occupants of the house (a rich young lady, and her servant boy). I'll post that, and pictures, one of these days.

Yesterday (or rather, two days ago?) Pat, Dan and I couldn't go cycling because of a certain monthly visitor, so we went to the National Museum instead. $5 student price, and you can roam nearly the entire museum! You know the mummy show that you pay $15 for? Yup, that was included too. Cool exhibition - it's the real McCoy, too. The actual mummy freaked me out a bit, though. I stood there staring at the mummy, when I realised that an actual body lies under the wraps, and I could make out the nose and stuff. Felt like puking. But still, I'm glad I got to see a real mummy.

We're going swimming today. Yay! Right after my driving lesson, I'll go home, eat a banana or two, and then head to the swimming complex with my cousin to work up an appetite. Then lunch! I'll make ddeokbokki; I kinda miss it haha. I think we're going swimming again on Saturday. I really hope it happens, because I'm looking forward to it already.

If anyone wants to go swimming or cycling, just give me a call whenever. I'll make time for it!

Okay, 1.30AM - maybe I can take a short nap. Good night, ya'll!

Why is life getting more exciting only when the holidays are ending? *shakes head*

Blast off, in 5, 4, 3, 2...

I can't believe how lazy I've been these days with updating the blog. Too lazy. I can't sit still in front of a computer enough to upload pictures and write down stories. So today I'll write only till I've had enough, then I'll leave it till next time (as always. Me, the great procrastinator. Remember my promise to update on Sri Lanka? Yup, nearly six months ago.)

Okay, so here's a run-through of what's happened since the holidays began (just in case I don't get around to posting pictures):
(Disclaimer: may not be in chronological order since even I have forgotten when what happened)

1st December
1. End of exams = free at last muahahaha!

1st December
2. Went to the Twilight&New Moon screening with Pat, Diyanah, Sabrina and Nadhirah. Second movie's so much better than the first, even if it was a little cliched. But that's exactly what the whol Twilight saga is, isn't it? Cliched? But that's why we love it! To laugh at the dialogue and acting in the first movie, and then to swoon over Jacob Black (or at least just his body) in the second.

4th December or so
3. Science Centre with MARX! Aishah, Mel, Pat and I signed autographs in the guest book, since we know our fans the E.T.s will want to see them, and collected stamps on our arms (okay, only I did that). And then wandering around Daiso where everything is fabulous and the evilness that reigns in Aishah kept trying to persuade me to buy cool-yet-useless contraptions I will never use.

4th - 7th December
4. Stayed at grandma's place, as blogged before. Probably gained another 5kg from that stay.

12th December
5. 19th year of being alive... we're so old... had PMS, so I embarrassingly had a crying melt-down at Secret Recipe where we had (a non-celebratory) dinner. But cake was good. Mmmm.

6. Scrabble... stayed in hostel for 8 days, spread over 2 weeks. Training till 12 am. My cousins Sabrina and Diyanah, and my dear sister stayed with me for two nights, so after I came back from training we'd cook rice or instant noodles or something, and stayed up till 5 watching movies on Thomas. Hall 9 eventually won the gold for IHRG, but I didn't play a single game, so it was a purely IC-related medal.

18th December
7. Lego-receiving ceremony! With Pat, Dan and Sam! And then Pat and I went back to hostel to play Lego, and tidy up my thing for the big moving day. To those who know what I'm talking about, I felt so bombed by the next morning, and I had to continue through the next day on only two hours of sleep. Dang tired, but had a hella roaring good time too. Eventually slept at 2AM, which equates new record of staying awake and kicking while suffering from extreme fatigue.

19th - 20th December
8. My Aussie cousins flew here on the 17th, like omgyayness. They (Amalina and Siti) stayed over at my place for two nights. I'm not sure what we did... watch a movie? AVATAR! Fabulous, magnificent, spectacular movie. They helped me move some things left over from hostel (farewell, Hall 9), watched more movies - because really, what else is life about? - and ate out.

21st - 25th December
9. Trip to Langkawi with the Aussiefam, and two other cousins from two different families. The two hotels we stayed in weren't the best, but you can't really expect much from a late booking. But, golly, the fun we had! We did so many things, which probably cost a small fortune, but we hardly shopped at all, so equilibrium achieved. I definitely will post pictures soon! BTW, Merry Christmas!

26th December
10. Finally had the 19th Birthday celebration/ memorial service at the Carousel, at the Royal Plaza hotel on Scotts. It was still Christmas season, so there was a magician and a juggler doing their rounds at the tables. Super cool. I ate until I was so full, that I could hardly breathe, so I took a walk to the Adidas store nearby to scout out my potential birthday presents, i.e. shoes. I can't wait to buy shoes!

27th - 29th December
11. Stayed at cousin Diyanah's place this time, with Amalina, Siti, and my sister. We watched Sherlock Holmes on the 28th, and played games and watched movies for the rest of the stay.

30th December
12. Cycling with Pat! Nearly 2 straight hours of cycling, which resulted in two very tired TEENagers (yes, we're still teens at least), and a blistered and sore butt (mine, obviously). We could barely walk properly. Lunch at Pastamania, rest at the library, and home for more rest.

31st December
13. Wild Wild Wet was soooo fun and tiring. I thought the Langkawi tripped tanned me, but this outing nearly burnt me alive! I used three layers of sunscreen on my face, one of SPF130 and two of SPF 50, and still I got ravaged by the sun. By the end of the day my skin was sore and feeling kinda tight, and my cheeks were burning red (really, seriously, red) from the sunburn. Not to mention I grew infinitely more brown. So I looked like a dark chocolate Fina who'd put on too much red blush. Diyanah, Sabrina, Amalina, Siti, my sister and I then met two older cousins, Kak Mas and Kak Hajar, at the Tampines SAFRA to play board games at the Minds Cafe. We were probably the noisiest bunch there, with lots of screaming and uncontrollable laughter. Screaming, due to the nature of the games, and laughter, well, because we were having a ball of a time.

2nd January
14. Amalina, Siti and family flew back to Aussie. I was kinda sick of their faces by then (HAHAHA) so it wasn't really an emotional goodbye. But they won't be returning here this year, since they've flown here thrice already in 2009. But if all goes to plan, and I get to go Melbourne again in July, then I'll see them again. Hopes up!

And today's the 4th of January, already into the 2010 year. How fast does time fly? I hope fast enough, because there's still 7 semesters left of NTU. Woe... Had dessert at Swensen's last night, because I'd been craving ice-cream since forever. And my first driving lesson of the year. And there's cycling tomorrow! Gym on Wednesday with my cousin, and swimming again on Thursday! I'm already too dark for my foundations and concealer, I may as well go all the way. Anyone else wanna go swimming?

One downer recently though, was the sold-out tickets to The Killers concert in Singapore on the 24th. :''( They're seriously like my most favourite band ever, and I won't get to see them in concert. Kinda found out about their concert too late... sighs.

Will update about the Langkawi trip with pictures soon... I swear! along with Sri Lanka pics!

So now I'm back at hostel -_-'
Oh well. At least I had a fabulous four days at my grandma's with my cousins. We stayed over supposedly to take care of her while my aunts go on holiday, but I think it was more of her taking care of us! We mostly played card games or watched movies - what else can you ask for in life?

I totally finished the $12 my mum gave to spend, plus all of my pocket money, which I think was in the 10s or 20s, as well as my sister's allowance money of $10. You'd think staying home is cheaper than going out, but in this case I beg to differ. The little glitch in this system was the night market down the road, which warranted the heavy spending on Ramly burgers, snacks, fried stuff, ice-cream, and a Winnie the Pooh Uno Card Game. I love my Uno cards! It's like the High School Musical one Pat and I bought at the beginning of the year, but with more nakedness (you know, because this time only Pooh and Roo wear shirts).

I came home yesterday at 11 at night, after my uncle took us out for yummy cheese prata and Milo Godzillas. The only thing I can say about yesterday is... I can't believe Team Zebra lost the Amazing Race! If not them, at least Sam (who has dreamy eyes) and Dan should have won. Not Team Barbie and Evil Ken. Non-watchers of The Amazing Race, I apologise.

Today my dad had a check-up with the leg specialist (hahaha) at SGH's Clinic P. I got my dad to play Uno with me in the waiting room, in full view of every other adult. And mind you, it was Winnie the Pooh, not just any old plain Uno cards haha. I won, of course. I'm not down with cheating, but I'm fine with selective teaching.

After that we got stuck in an hour long jam getting into J.B. (JaeBeom! jk), but I figured Uno isn't meant to be played while driving.

Lunch, and grocery shopping-hours later, we had to rush back to hostel for my Scrabble practice. I was an hour late, but I brought donuts to satiate everyone - bribery's always the easiest, though not cheapest way out. One thing I found out about myself today: I am officially the worst Scrabble player in the entire Hall 9! And nearly the worst Boggle player. Thank goodness In-charge does not equate to IHG Player.

Another thing: black eyeliner will always smudge. Regardless of precautions against it (i.e. eyeshadow below eyes). Sighs - Scrabble practice must have been so totally embarrassing. Story of my life, as they say. I fell down on Saturday, I fell down on Sunday night, and I'll probably fall down again two more times this week. Anyone know a charm to take away the embarrassment jinx?

It's 11.34pm in Melbourne, which makes it 9.34 back home. I'm back from what has been the most tiring day I've ever had in Australia: Toboggan-ing on Mount Baw Baw!

My first time seeing snow, and it was such a surprise! The guy down the mountain wouldn't rent us toboggans because he said the snow might be too little for that, so I wasn't expecting much. But as it turned out, there was loads of snow! And although the snow suits we rented was to keep the cold out, it got pretty warm because of the sun's reflection off the snow, and running up the slope as soon as we'd slid down.

Tobogganing just basically means sledding down a slope. It's so fun! The only thing was I had to apologise to many people each time I went down the slope, cos I ran into everyone!

Will update with pictures when I get home and self-quarantine! Seriously though, nothing in Melbourne points towards any swine flu problem. Strange.

\\would you believe I've bought 14 tops so far? ... money's running out! $200 left//

Saturday, July 04, 2009

Hey guys, I'm in Melbourne, like, finally! I flew in alone from Perth on 1st July, then on the same day drove for like 10 hours with my cousins and their dad's friends to Sydney. And now I'm finally back in Melbourne. Glad to feel comfy again, cos the cabin in Sydney was serously darn cold even though Sydney's supposed to be warmer than Perth.

I must say, I reall really really miss Perth and Singapore. Singapore mostly because I miss showering without shivering and watching Korean shows amd eating food that actually has spice. (And family, of course) Perth, because I miss everyone!

Staying with Pat and Dan at Aunty Marie's (Dan's aunt) house was so fun. We shopped for our own breakfast, but sometimes Aunty Marie cooks yummy familiar food for us. The house is so comfy and welcoming, and we saved on transport since Aunty Marie almost always helped us find someone to drop us off. I think it was only on Sunday that we took a bus somewhere... and got caught in the rain afterwards haha. Silly us!

Most of all I miss the company. Holidays fee different when you're with friends, because each day seems like an exciting new adventure. Plus we're all shopping junkies, so we had the same objective in going out haha. We got to touch kangaroos and a wombat, a lizard and a koala. We explored a prison. We ate Perth's Top 5 fish and chips (at two different places). We love Supre! And we love Aunty Marie! Haha. Wish my time in Perth didn't fly by so fast...

But now I'm in Melbourne, so I fully intend to enjoy myself and shop like mad at all the factory outlets and markets. Will write more!

Pictures will be uploaded when I get home, cos there's lots.

fin*

Would you believe I took a plane all by myself from Perth to Melbourne without any mishaps? I did leave my jacket at the security screening place, but I got it back, so no harm done.

Thursday, June 04, 2009

So many shadows cast over the up-coming Australia trip. Number one on the agenda:

SWINE FLU!

Bloody pigs! Haha Although, I did hear that animal rights (or something) activists were the ones who requested the name-change from swine flu to H1N1 because it's not the pigs fault. Poor piggies. But Australia has over 600 cases now, with 521 occuring in Victoria, and 2 in Western Australia.

Now, this means that Perth is relatively unaffected, and probably safer than Singapore considering that Singapore has 9 (or was it 10?) cases. But Victoria! Melbourne hosts 70% of the Victorian population, which means that of the 521, chances are that 365 or more are from Melbourne.

For now, my plans remain unchanged, since my main priority in heading to Melbourne is to spend time with my cousins and not just to go to tourist attractions. If anything should happen, I'll just have to deal with it. Intense (well, compared to anything else I've done at home) research has proven that H1N1 is like normal flu, and you're more likely to get it if you're a smoker...

I guess I'll just have to see how it goes...

DFS day was fun! We hogged the table at Island Creamery for a long time after the ice-cream had gone down to gastric-juice-land. We should have outings more often!

I'm way super glad to be back at "home", because I've been staying at my grandparents' place since I got back from KK on Wednesday. It gets a bit boring when all day, all that's available to do is watch cable TV. Even though I'm still having to sleep on the floor, at least it's home. No cable tv because the painters are coming today, but at least I have the computer. And - hey! - the kitchen cabinets, sink and stove are in, so that means we'll be able to finally put away some things.

I'm so so so leaning towards the idea of staying at the NTU hostel, maybe even be roomies with Dan! It'll solve the distance problem, and I get to enjoy a little more autonomy. Maybe it'll even motivate me to actually study everyday instead of getting hooked on television, my number one vice.

Speaking of vices... I unfortunately was overruled in wanting to celebrate Jeremy's birthday today with the gang. Oh well. Being old enough in the eyes of the law definitely does not mean old enough in the eyes of the allowance-givers.

I really seem to have nothing to blog about huh? No all-important opinion-touting, or insights, or revelations. I think that's an indication that I'd be in way over my head in Uni. Scary!!!

Highs of the week:

Going to the Mount Kinabalu base camp because the views were breathstealing. I experienced a zen moment while driving round and round on the mountain roads.

DFS! Need I elaborate?

Smoked salmon, edam cheese and crackers for breakfast. Oh. My.

Finally reaching a decision about uni that has me feeling actual excitement, albeit in an atmosphere still charged with reservations and fears about uni life and my ability to cope with it.

My proper use of "albeit"? Would K still have circled the above usage and commented in her just-as-loud-as-her-voice handwritten script? Haha (This was one of the DFS coversation topics)

Being home. Awww...

Liverpool thrashing ManUre 4-1, and Arsenal also beating Blackburn Rovers 4-0. (This technically didn't happen this week, but what the hey?)

Lows: I'm not in the mood to rehash the bad stuff. I'll make like Class 95 fm and think of "only the good stuff".

Seeyaz!

I hereby proclaim that cycling is the best form of exercise ever!!

Swimming may undoubtedly work out your whole body, but your hair gets wet and drowned in chlorine, and everybody at the pool gets a free pass to ogle at your less than perfect body shape (at least, for people like me they do).

Basketball, volleyball and netball may be a fun type of working out, but you need at least 3 other people to play with for there to be any sort of action going on. And you need the space, a net/basket and a ball. Too many props.

Kayaking... well, I'd like to try it again one day, but having no idea on how to rent a kayak, or where to do so, or even how much it'll set me back means that this is really not a practical option for me.

Jogging has always been the bane of my life, and as long as there are any other alternatives through which I may endeavour to keep fit, I would definitely keep far, far away from jogging.

Going to the gym is fine, and cheaper than renting a bike, but the scenery's static, and there's no wind blowing into your face to make you feel good!

Therefore, I conclude again that cycling is the best form of working out ever! Even with the $7/2 hour cost that it incurs.

Of course, one loophole around this $7 is to ride my own bike around nearby parks, but as my bike is currently (and always has been) quite spoilt and un-ride-able, this option is a no-go for me.

Today marks the third time I've cycled at East Coast Park within a week. This time it was with Pat, whilst the last two occasions were with my cousins. I'm sure the shopkeepers there must be sick of spotting a girl in a black Reebok cap and jeans cycling round there and being a hazard to other beach-goers. But it's so be-lardy fun!

Lalala~ "It's undertable..." (Inside joke; you have to have been there to understand)

Pat and I were planning where to go when we've finished working for 5-6 months while the rest (Jere-Mimi, Bong and Eilania; Shauna went home earlier) were pool-ing. So far, we've been returning again and again to the choice of England, just because of Rob Pattinson and the cute guy posse, and the cool flea market vibe of the place. We thought it'd be too expensive, so of course we began considering New Zealand (to see sheep), Paris (omg beautiful), Hawaii (too hot though), Germany and Russia (well, only I considered this for the history factor), Spain and Italy (grand old buildings and possible Volterra filming location for New Moon), Oregon (for New Moon filming), L.A. (because that's where Rob Pattinson lives now. lol!), Turkey (amazing bazaars but scary), etc. etc.

But now I've got good news! The Australian dollar now costs less than the SingDollar (or has it always been that way?) while the Sterling is now only twice the value of the SingDollar, instead of thrice. The cheapest is of course the Rupiah, with one Rupiah being 0.0001 percent of our dollar, but Indonesia's scary... The Euro is also about twice our value, which is normal, so that's also an option.

The whole world's a stage, and Pat and Fina are scouts looking for the best actors to entertain us! What a funny analogy!

The time for me to retreat into slumber has come. Good night all!

midnight walks... the last to leave the bar... counterfeit arsenal jersey... fabregas pin-up...

=================================================

words to describe my holiday?
i only need one: eventful
although i didn't get to go to the themepark, cos i was the only one game enough, i still had fun

there's always shopping to be done
i bought a few things, mainly the cheaper items
like the jersey! this season's jersey!
and i've worn it out once already!
and a few bags, a few pairs of shoes, mascara, mac blusher...
just the normal stuff

there's one thing different about shopping in malaysia compared to singapore
it's so fun pretending you have loads of money in your bank account (read: i have none haha)
and going into guess and braun buffel and all that as if you really intend to buy something
i can't really do that in singapore; i'm not brave enough on home turf
but there -ahaha!- it's a blank slate
anything goes!

so it appears i have been a little (or a lot) lazy these past few days to post anything
i had to contend with fever and flu for the first two and last two nights of the trip
but that's okay; i didn't prevent any major outings from taking place

i watched spirited away with pat and dan at dan's house the day after i got back
her mum bought us fabulous tasting chicken rice

and yesterday was spent cycling (and teaching my sis how to do so) at east coast park
so fun
and we're doing it again on january first!

i really haven't enjoyed enough of my holidays to start work yet
but i have to earn some money somehow
so i sent in my application for my old job yesterday
hope i really get it! the deadline's on 1st jan

twilighting with pat soon
can't wait! i so want to dissect the story again...

tomorrow's gym and movie day with sis
hope we wake up on time...
i've been going to sleep at 4.30 am these last few days
and waking up at the appalling time of 1 pm...

my dad wants me to sign up for driving lessons only after we've moved!
that's so far away!...
i want a license ASAP just so i can start cruising around singapore
and not have to worry about missing the last bus and all that!

ah well. every umbrella's got a different handle. (really? i could have sworn my umbrella has sister umbrellas all with the same handle)

p.s. call me out anytime for anything!
i want to spend my last moments of freedom doing fun stuff

okay, final post before i'm off
i don't know why i've been blogging sooo much lately
maybe to make up for not blogging again till next thursday

so i managed to make through the night without sleeping
changed the blogskin and song
(i thought it was just another christmas song, until i realised that the singer understood me:
what the heck is a partridge, and i do think it's a "terrible [gift] to get" haha)
woke up the whole family on time
got to eat my first and final mega mcgriddles breakfast
and soon i'll be on my way, with a headache, runny nose and heavy eyelids
yup

totally holiday mood
haha
but i've brought five books with me
so all will be well

till next time
and -only read this on the 25th- merry christmas!

fin*
on a rare spontaneous whim, my parents have decided to leave for vacation one day early
yup
just today

so now i'm on a scramble to wash all the clothes i'd meant to bring with me but hadn't packed
and we don't have a room to stay in as of yet
just gonna leave it up to fate (haha) if there're any hotel rooms available in kl
if not, well, there's always my mother's many malaysian relatives

i guess i'd better change my blogskin to the christmas one by tonight
probably after i've finished packing and all
cos i usually never go to sleep anyways, before travelling
just so that i can be the one to wake everyone up on time
i can always sleep during the car ride

so i'll see ya'll after christmas then
!!!! (= !!!!

just got back from a day out with the fam
and i am so happy with my new l'oreal double extension waterproof mascara!
i tested it as soon as i got home, and wiped water all over my face and especially the eyes
and no smudging happened!
wee!

before this i was using the maybelline xxl one
it was good, but it's my sister's
so i had to shop for a new one
and now i'm happy!
now, if only i could trick my parents into buying me new blusher and foundation...
and maybe even gold eyeliner! and how about purple mascara to match my desired purple hair?
haha
lots to do...

and i managed to find a new book for me to read
cold plague by daniel kalla
sounds interesting, about a conspiracy behind the spreading of a disease
and it's quite recent; only published this year
can't wait to start!
as soon as i'm done with the wretched last paper

which reminds me
that besides the annotating of fasting, feasting that i did at the airport last saturday
i haven't done much else
don't really feel like it
but i've no choice
hopefully i'll start tonight...

see ya'll other poor losers in school tomorrow!
because we're being bloody dragged to school
for something i'm pretty certain will be like other lectures that i didn't learn much from

darn, school's starting again tomorrow
now that it's just a few hours away,
what's going through my mind is what i should have done to enjoy my holiday best

like go to the beach!
man, if "unfulfilled dream" had a name, it'd be going to the beach!
i should have just gone alone!
but i could hardly muster up the energy to wake up in the morning
everyday, i wake up at 6.30, pray, and go back to sleep
... or watch friends!
haha

something else i should have done: shopping!
not for clothes, though i'd have enjoyed that very much
it's just that i've been wanting to go to borders or kinokuniya
perhaps pick up a football magazine, or maybe another pretty notebook
but i didn't =(
lethargy has been winning it's battle against me lately

although, i did manage to do some late night shopping at mustafa centre yesterday
late as in 11 pm
so fun!
a trip there always consists of me taking anything i want and putting it in the cart
and believe me you, mustafa has a ginormous variety of goodies
stuff you can't find at ntuc or cold storage!
yesterday, though, restraint came in the form of my sister
many of the things i wanted, like the la va quiri cheese cubes, or chocolate milk, or dark chocolate gelare ice cream, were taken out of the cart and returned to their places
well, take pity on my parents' wallets

i did get my two cartons of mac and cheese, and sara lee strawberry cheesecake,
and aloe vera drink, and choc chip cookie dough ice cream,
and bickford's creamy soda, and pop tarts,
and... i'm salivating already! haha
so maybe putting those things back in the cart wasn't such a great loss...

hahah
i'm going off to enjoy the remnants of my holiday
all twelve hours of it
see ya!

hey all!!!
am i glad to say that BT2s are over or what!
(and that isn't a question, by the way)
of course, it's aftermath will bite me in the butt later on,
but in the meanwhile, i might as well just relax and take it easy

i've spent the weekend reading,
and have thus far completed three chick lit books
and i have enjoyed almost every minute of it
(i certainly did not enjoy reading about the heroine getting thrown into jail,
or being slandered in the national press, though)
just living the high life, you know

interestingly,
i visited my grandparents' house today
to find that their surrounding walls and gates have been painted two colours
that are not unlike my blog colours now
watered-down green and pale blue-green
okay, so that isn't really interesting, but that's what i've been doing this weekend
kinda boring

also, i realise that working in a bookshop isn't all fun and games
especially when they ask for books that you have no idea about,
because you don't really work there
i do like it fine being the cashier, though,
except when they ask such questions
but people who visit the bookshop generally are patient people,
so i've never had a hard time dealing with a customer

am hoping that the remaining three days of my holiday are more relaxing
maybe i'll go to the beach one of these days
alone? i've nobody to go with, that's for sure

EURO FINALS ARE STARTING IN 2 HOURS!!!!
viva la espana!!!

España será victoriosa!!!
(Spain will be victorious!)

Fabregas golpeará extremo con el pie!!
(Supposed to be "Fabregas will kick butt", but it came out
"Fabregas will strike end with the foot" - close enough, i suppose :p )

i'll try to find things to do till then
finanana dice adiós!

p.s. Spain is such a good-looking team!
fernando torres, cesc fabregas, xabi alonso, david villa, david silva, etc...
plus, wimbledon lawn championships are going on
more goodies to watch!

p.p.s.
i want to be one of the guys who stand behind the goalposts and take pictures!
especially when fabregas is playing!
